Immerse - Double Fine Adventure! OST by Terence Lee (Lifeformed) -------------------------- Album notes - 02/18/2014 "Immerse" is the original soundtrack to the documentary, "Double Fine Adventure!", which is about the development of the game Broken Age, by Double Fine Productions. Broken Age was the first big Kickstarter game project, and helped launch a revolution of self publishing games via crowdfunding. A key part of that project was the filming of a documentary by 2 Player Productions. After the Kickstarter finished in early 2012, Asif Siddiky from 2PP contacted me about making the music for the documentary. At this point in time, I had just finished creating "Fastfall", the soundtrack for the indie game Dustforce. It was my first musical project - through it I learned music production and started developing a style of my own. I was excited to work on the Double Fine Adventure because it was a chance to try some new musical styles, while still being within the familiar domain of video games. Dustforce was a game with clean and colorful visuals, a modern take on retro aesthetics. My music reflected that with shiny reverb on chiptune sounds. This style carried over to "Immerse" at its start. Over time, I started experimenting with different ideas - more samples, simpler percussion, more complex percussion, and a more atmospheric sound. Making music for a documentary was a bit of a challenge for me, because there usually were some guidelines about what I needed to make. I would have instructions to make a 3 minute track that started tense but ended happy - it seems straightforward, but it was quite difficult for me to do. Usually when I make music, I don't know what I'll end up creating. I just start playing around until I like a sound, and then build off of that and discover where it goes. At the end I'll look back and see that I ended up somewhere far from what I started off with. That's kind of what game development is like - an initial idea draws you in, and takes you places you never imagined; it's the very spirit of adventure. I named the album "Immerse" for several reasons. The first is that it relates to the style of the music: watery, flowing and relaxing, with a wet production style. This is also reflected in the album art, a phthalo blue watercolor that I created (after many failed attempts). The second reason is that "immersion" is a word I'd use to describe the whole Double Fine Adventure project: the Double Fine team was plunging into the unknown, immersing themselves in the risks and rewards of the adventure they set out for themselves. Thank you for listening to my music and supporting me.
